Heat pump technology uses ambient heat to heat and cool buildings or to heat water. The advantage is that renewable energy from the air, groundwater and the earth is freely available at all times and all around us. In principle, heat pumps work like a refrigerator, only in reverse. They extract heat from the environment and raise it to a higher temperature level in order to heat buildings or heat water. A refrigerant absorbs the heat from the environment and evaporates in the process. A compressor compresses the refrigerant, which increases the temperature. The refrigerant then transfers the heat to the building's heating system and is liquefied again. This cycle is repeated continuously. You only need 25% electricity to drive the system, and if you want to heat in an even more environmentally friendly way, you can combine your heat pump with photovoltaics and generate the electricity you need using solar energy.
